Silver Dollar City Parks & Resorts is striking gold as the acclaimed Midwest theme park enters a new era of investment and expansion. President Brad Thomas announced a historic $500 million investment plan for the decade in 2024, and the first $150 million is now slated to debut in early 2027.

The two highlights arriving in 2027 marks a record investment for the park, which has built one project at a time for over 66 years. Funworld got an up-close construction tour of both Silver Dollar City Resort, the Heartland’s first theme resort hotel which overlooks Table Rock Lake, and the newly announced Miner’s Mountain Express, a new family coaster being built in close partnership with Mack Rides.

Surprising Research: Guests Don't Care as Much about Superlatives

World records snag headlines, but Silver Dollar City’s finding connection to story is what draws in the guests. After extensive research in creating Miner’s Mountain Express, Joey Thorsen, director of content & PR for Silver Dollar City Parks & Resorts, tells Funworld, “A ride superlative, like America's Longest or Fastest, ranked at the very bottom. And for us, Based on a True Story was number one.” For the new coaster, the park drew inspiration from the Marvel Cave, the founding attraction atop which the park was built.

In an industry of “longest, fastest and tallest” coaster battles, Silver Dollar City takes a different approach: create meaningful rides rooted in the stories of the Ozarks and trust the authenticity to be the draw.

Balance of Expansion and Maintaining Charm: “We’ve always told stories.”

With ambitious plans yet to be announced, including another $350 million investment in the park and resort, President Thomas is aware of the challenge of growing organically. With a nod to the latest ride announcement and its connection to the Marvel Cave, Thomas says, “This place has real history, and that’s how we stay rooted. No theme park on the globe has a mine that had miners in it in the 1880s, or started doing paid tours in that mine 132 years ago.”

Thomas notes that every attraction and addition to the park has them “...thinking about the past, celebrating that past, but then also thinking, how do we make that story relevant to families in today’s world?” Storytelling isn't a new trend for Silver Dollar City; it is the foundation of its product development since its inception.

The Resort Extends Storytelling Beyond the Park

When Silver Dollar City Resort debuts in 2027, it will mark several major milestones transforming the regional park into a true multi-day resort destination and the first theme park resort in America’s Heartland. Thomas says, “We've been planning the resort, and it's been on our radar for almost 20 years.”

In explaining the reach of the park and the growing demand for a resort, Thomas notes that the park has “visitors from all 50 states and multiple countries in the course of a year and season passholders from all 50 states.”

Erling Acosta, general manager of the Silver Dollar City Resort, shares that there will be park references hidden and in plain sight throughout the property: “Everything that we have done, from the furniture in the rooms to the decorations in our lobby, will have hints of things that happen at the park.”

The Old vs. The New: Trading Thunderation for Miner’s Mountain Express

Family favorite Thunderation, built by Arrow Dynamics and opened in 1993, will make its final descent into the depths of the Ozarks at the end of the 2026 season. In contemplating the lifespan of a ride, Thomas says, “There's that time when you know that this ride needs to come to the end of its life. Thunderation going away wasn't an easy decision, but it's been on our radar for several years.”

Thomas understands that authenticity doesn't necessarily mean keeping every attraction forever. “Anytime a ride leaves a park, there's always mixed emotion.”

Employee Empowerment: What Silver Dollar City is Doing Differently

As Silver Dollar City earns its fifth title as America’s Best Theme Park in USA TODAY in 2026, Thomas shares what operators can learn from the park’s approach to frontline employees. “We know that people who are cared for will love our guests a little more deeply.”

That philosophy extends to affordable employee meals, including a protein and vegetables meal for $4, as well as a health clinic available to employees and their dependents. The park also continues a profit-sharing tradition launched in the 1960s.

The result is remarkable employee loyalty: “We have 20 employees who have been with the company for 50-plus years. We have over 300 that have been here for over 25 years.”
