Rani Bal
Rani Bal, vice president of people at THG Creative, traces her journey in the attractions industry back to a summer job managing a restaurant at Kings Dominion theme park in Doswell, Virginia. “I never looked back,” she says, recalling how that first role ignited her passion for the field. Over her career, Bal has become renowned for her unique approach to hiring, which she calls matchmaking. She explains, “I don’t hire the resume; I hire the person. Oftentimes, I’m hiring potential—it may not be the exact fit in the moment, but that’s what I take pride in.” Her ability to recognize talent has helped launch the careers of many successful professionals in the industry. Bal attributes her growth to a network of mentors and collaborators, both male and female, who have shaped her path. “I’ve been really lucky,” she shares. “I never referred to them as mentors; I always said people adopted me.” She likens the lessons she’s gained to “heirlooms” that she carries forward, crediting colleagues like Mary Cluff for inspiring pivotal career shifts. To those entering the industry, Bal advises: “Networking is so, so important. Learn how to say yes. The more yeses you say, the more opportunities you get, and the more layered your resume becomes.””
