Record-breaking launch coaster signals next step in improving the guest experience

A misty, gray Wednesday in Jackson Township, New Jersey, popped with purple, as construction workers received the first piece of roller coaster track for Six Flags Great Adventure’s 2027 project.

The track for the unnamed coaster arrived with components that are standard on launch coasters: electromagnetic motors, sensors, and fans that are pieces of a cooling system.

Tape adhered to the front of the track has handwriting on it that appears to be German: “Weiche I; Fahrrichtung Rechts.” When translated to English, the handwriting says: “Switch I Direction of travel: Right.” This provides a clue that the new ride could feature a switch track of some nature.

Following a slew of high-profile ride closures after the 2024 season, Great Adventure used the 2025 and 2026 seasons to focus on improving the amusement park’s guest experience. Renovated merchandise locations, expanded live entertainment offerings, and enhanced food and beverage menus took center stage.

In 2027, the transformation of the park continues with a new record-breaking launch coaster.

“The 2026 upgrades lay the groundwork for a new era at the park, and the 2027 coaster will build on that momentum,” Regional Manager of Public Relations Ryan Eldredge tells IAAPA News. “This major attraction will redefine our skyline, strengthen our ride lineup, and help usher in a fresh chapter for Great Adventure as we continue investing in guest experience over multiple seasons.”

Arrival of the purple track sections and gray support columns is the latest construction milestone. Crews began digging the coaster’s footings and pouring concrete foundations late last summer. On Wednesday afternoon, the cargo truck opened its doors, cranes whirred, and crews brought the track to its last stop in a staging area, awaiting installation.

Although officials remain tight-lipped on ride specifics, the attraction was first announced as a record-breaking launch coaster in November 2024, with a targeted 2026 opening date. This past July, Six Flags announced the ride’s debut would be pushed back. Despite the delay, Six Flags Great Adventure continues building excitement—and awareness—amongst fans and season pass holders as the ride begins taking shape.

“We maintain momentum by sharing consistent construction updates and milestones that keep guests engaged from the start,” Eldredge shares. “Pairing those updates with a strong 2026 season ensures fans stay excited and connected as we build toward the debut of this major new ride.”
