Visionary Chillian operator and facility owner passes away at age 81.

IAAPA mourns the loss of Gerardo Arteaga Oehninger Sr., a true pioneer in the attractions industry and lifelong supporter of IAAPA, who passed away at age 81 on Wednesday, August 13.
Gerardo’s journey began in the 1970s when he transitioned from managing an earth-moving business in Chile to opening his first bumper car attraction. Recognizing the deep need for leisure entertainment in Latin America, he pursued his vision with determination.
The year 1975 proved to be a pivotal year for Gerardo. He visited Playcenter in São Paulo, igniting his dream of opening an amusement park in Chile. He also attended his first IAAPA Expo and became one of the first three IAAPA members in Latin America.
With his newly found guidance and inspiration, Gerard approached the City of Santiago, Chile, and successfully gained approval to build what would become Fantasilandia. Over the years, Fantasilandia grew into a beloved destination, bringing joy to millions across the region.
Gerardo’s contributions didn’t stop there. He expanded his influence with projects like Mundo Mágico, a miniature world of Chile, and the Happyland FEC chain, solidifying his impact on the industry. His family business evolved into a professional corporation, driven by his dedication and passion.
Meanwhile, his support of IAAPA in the Latin America region over decades became legendary.
In recent years, Gerardo and his team embarked on the relocation and expansion of Fantasilandia, along with the construction of a world-class water park. His nearly 50-year career was marked by careful planning, innovation, and the unwavering support of his wife, María Inés, and their four children, who continue to carry his legacy forward. Son Gerardo Arteaga is a past chairman of IAAPA, while son Felipe is a member of the IAAPA Latin America, Caribbean Advisory Board. Gerardo will be remembered as people’s person, who always put his family first.
