To brake and launch trains, some of the major roller coaster manufacturers use rare earth neodymium magnets provided by Amazing Magnets (Booth #3715) in their systems. At the company’s booth at IAAPA Expo, visitors can see them in action. By pressing a button, they can magnetically launch a scale-model train and then see it slow to a halt.
The demo uses linear synchronous motors for the launch system and an eddy-brake system to bring the train to a stop. Eddy currents, which are generated in a conductor through electromagnetic induction, produce the drag force to stop the train.
The company’s patented neodymium magnets are the strongest type of permanent magnets commercially available, according to Tim Boettcher, president of Amazing Magnets. “We help companies design, develop, and produce innovative products,” he said. “We provide the mag-nets, component assemblies, engineering, and assistance with design and production.”
Amazing Magnets also has proprietary magnets on display that are used for special effects in escape rooms, haunted attractions, and other applications.
