It is common at IAAPA events to share your professional experiences with others while learning about the main business concerns of the industry such as safety, operations, marketing, and innovation, from large organizations. But what about the subtler concepts of feelings and emotions?
Due to the circumstances caused by the coronavirus pandemic, it is especially hard to disassociate our feelings from our lives, both personal and professional. The IAAPA Latin America, Caribbean Facebook live last month provided these recommendations for managing emotions; communicating properly with ourselves, family, and collaborators; and serving as responsible leaders during these difficult times:
- Identify emotions and give them a name—it is about acknowledging what is happening to us. When we can label our emotions, we can see them as concrete and manageable. Talk about what we feel.
- Give direction to our attention and thoughts, focusing on the environment that depends entirely on us and what we have power to influence.
- Generate conversations of possibility, versus conversations of non-possibility. Create dialogues that lead to open opportunities and move to action.
- Practice empathy. Understand that each of us is unique. This situation affects us all, and we go through it as we can.
- Consciously attend to the here and now. In the face of uncertainty, the most precious thing is the present time.
