Brazilian Zoo Welcomes 500 Animals, Many Rescued
Lemurs, flamingos, a yellow-headed alligator, and owls are some of the many animals guests will see at the Taubaté zoo in São Paulo. The zoo is home to Projeto Selva Viva, an initiative that provides treatment and care for abused or neglected animals rescued by Brazil’s Environmental Military Police.
“We receive animals that were in illegal possession, on a farm, or for sale,” explains José Walter Coli Júnior, project site manager. “They are brought by police, and then we do the work of treating the injuries and recovery so that they are released back into nature. Those who can’t get back to nature, stay with us.”
During the week, local schools visit the zoo to learn about the environment and endangered species, and on the weekends, the zoo opens to the public with opportunities to interact with some of the animals. Through Projeto Selva Viva, guests will see several species of reptiles, mammals, amphibians, arachnids, and birds.
