S&S Worldwide | Kennywood
West Mifflin, Pennsylvania
Two of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania’s most beloved institutions—Kennywood and the Pittsburgh Steelers—have teamed up to change the skyline of the landmark amusement park. In an unprecedented partnership, Kennywood will introduce Steelers Country, a new area dedicated to the legendary National Football League (NFL) team.
“The Pittsburgh Steelers have long been part of the fabric here, while Kennywood has been part of this community for over 120 years,” says Christopher Salerno, director of sales and marketing for Kennywood. “‘Steel Curtain’ is not only a great entertainment experience, but it is also a great source of pride for Pittsburghers, as two of Pittsburgh’s most revered cornerstones have teamed up for a historic collaboration.”
Steelers Country will be anchored by “Steel Curtain,” a new roller coaster from S&S Worldwide Inc. The largest roller coaster ever built by the North Logan, Utah-based company, “Steel Curtain” towers 220 feet above the park’s landscape.
The massive ride’s 4,000 feet of track will feature nine inversions, including one of the world’s tallest at 197 feet above the ground. Top speed during the two-minute ride will be 76 mph.
“The massive structure will not only change Kennywood’s skyline but West Mifflin, Pennsylvania. It makes an impressive appearance and can be seen from miles around,” Salerno says.
Riders sit in trains decorated in the team’s iconic black and gold colors, complete with number 33 on the center of the lead vehicle, reflecting the year the NFL franchise was founded. Even the seats, featuring lap-bar restraints, will look like American footballs.
While “Steel Curtain” will no doubt generate the most attention, it is only one part of a larger 3-acre area dedicated to the Steelers. Located next to the roller coaster will be the Steelers Experience, a 16,000-square-foot indoor, interactive experience filled with football-related activities and a gift shop. Its centerpiece will be the “Terrible Tower,” a two-story climbing structure for young Steelers fans. Two food and beverage locations will also allow for creative events on game days for fans hungry for excitement.
“Putting both of these favorite brands together is going to ignite this autumn’s football season with in-park tailgate parties and season-long excitement in Kennywood’s Steelers Country,” Salerno says.
